Case Study 2 – Seagate ST320LT020-9YG142 Bad Head Hard Disk Data Recovery

Case Study 2 – Seagate ST320LT020-9YG142 Bad Head Hard Disk Data Recovery

Seagate 320GB HDD Very Slow Reading & Bad Head Data Recovery in Chennai

Case ID: 1853VE
Drive Type: Seagate 2.5-inch SATA Hard Disk Drive
Model: ST320LT020-9YG142
Serial Number: W0455EB6
Firmware: 0010SDM1
Capacity: 320GB
Total Sectors: 625,142,448

Problem Reported

The client submitted a Seagate ST320LT020-9YG142 320GB hard disk to Ram Infotech Data Recovery Center with a very low reading speed and unstable sector access problem.

Initial diagnosis indicated symptoms consistent with a weak or damaged read/write head.

The drive contained two partitions, but the client required data recovery only from the D: partition.

Initial Diagnosis

During the sector-level diagnostic process, the hard disk was responding extremely slowly. Multiple read errors were detected while accessing the media.

The drive repeatedly generated segment read errors such as:

Seg Read Error at LBA = 005E8620
Seg Read Error at LBA = 005E8A80
Seg Read Error at LBA = 005E8EE0
Seg Read Error at LBA = 005E9340
Seg Read Error at LBA = 005E97A0
Seg Read Error at LBA = 005E9C00
Seg Read Error at LBA = 005EA060
Seg Read Error at LBA = 005EA4C0
Seg Read Error at LBA = 005EA920
Seg Read Error at LBA = 005EAD80
Seg Read Error at LBA = 005EB1E0
Seg Read Error at LBA = 005EB640
Seg Read Error at LBA = 005EBAA0
Seg Read Error at LBA = 005EBF00

These repeated read errors, combined with the extremely slow response, suggested that the drive was unable to reliably read certain platter areas.

Technical Information

The following information was identified during diagnosis:

Original Drive Capacity Including MC : 25BA2630
Host LBA – Maximum Host LBA : 2542EAB0
Disc LBA – Maximum Disc LBA : 04B744C5
MC Offset – User Partition Host LBA : 00743D70

The drive also generated:

Input Command Error

F3 T>
Rst 0x10M
(P) SATA Reset

The SATA reset behaviour and repeated read instability confirmed that this was not a normal logical-data-loss case.

Root Cause

After diagnosis, the hard disk showed symptoms of a weak/bad read-write head combined with unstable media reading.

Typical symptoms found in this case included:

  • Extremely slow sector reading

  • Repeated segment read errors

  • Unstable access to certain LBA ranges

  • SATA reset behaviour

  • Read timeout or command errors

  • Difficulty maintaining continuous imaging

Continuing to repeatedly scan a weak-head hard disk using ordinary data recovery software can increase stress on the drive and potentially make the condition worse.

Data Recovery Requirement

The Seagate hard disk contained two partitions.

The client specifically requested:

Recover data only from the D: drive / second partition.

Instead of unnecessarily stressing the entire disk, the recovery process was focused on the partition and sector ranges relevant to the client's required data.

Recovery Process

Our data recovery engineers performed controlled diagnosis and sector-level recovery of the affected Seagate hard drive.

The recovery process included:

  1. Checking HDD identification, firmware and capacity.

  2. Analysing read/write head behaviour.

  3. Identifying unstable and unreadable LBA ranges.

  4. Controlling repeated read attempts to reduce unnecessary stress on the failing head.

  5. Working around slow and problematic sectors.

  6. Creating a sector-level image of recoverable areas.

  7. Focusing recovery on the client's required D: partition.

  8. Reconstructing the file system from the recovered sectors.

  9. Extracting the required files from the recovered partition.

  10. Verifying the recovered data before delivery.

Result – Data Recovered

The Seagate ST320LT020-9YG142 hard disk was successfully processed for data recovery.

Despite the bad/weak head symptoms, very slow reading speed, repeated segment read errors and unstable sectors, our engineers were able to recover the required data from the client's D: partition.

Case Status

SOLVED – Required D: Drive Data Recovered

Seagate Bad Head Hard Disk Data Recovery in Chennai

A hard disk with a weak or damaged read/write head may show symptoms such as:

  • Hard disk detected but reading extremely slowly

  • Files taking a very long time to open

  • Disk freezing during copy operations

  • CRC or read errors

  • Bad sectors increasing rapidly

  • Drive disconnecting during data transfer

  • SATA reset errors

  • Clicking or repeated retry sounds

  • Partition visible but files inaccessible

  • Hard disk not detecting consistently

If important data is stored on a failing HDD, avoid repeatedly running CHKDSK, formatting the disk, initializing it, or scanning it multiple times using ordinary recovery software.

Professional diagnosis should be performed before further stressing the drive.

Case Study 1 – Western Digital 4TB My Passport Data Recovery | WD40NMZW-11GX6S1

Western Digital 4TB My Passport Data Recovery in Chennai | WD40NMZW-11GX6S1 Head Replacement Case

Ram Infotech Data Recovery successfully completed a Western Digital 4TB My Passport data recovery case involving a hard drive with a serious read/write head problem.

The affected external hard disk was not working properly and the customer required recovery of important files stored on the drive.

WD 4TB My Passport Drive Details

Brand: Western Digital
Product: WD My Passport
Model: WDC WD40NMZW-11GX6S1
Firmware: 01.01A01
Capacity: 4 TB
Total Sectors: 7,814,037,168

Case No: 7832A
Customer: Mani
Problem: External hard disk not working
Diagnosis: Read/Write Head Problem
Case Status: Successfully Completed

Problem Found

The Western Digital 4TB My Passport hard drive was received in a not working condition.

After professional diagnosis, our data recovery technicians identified a problem with the hard disk's internal read/write head assembly.

A damaged or weak head can prevent the drive from reading the magnetic platters correctly. In such cases, repeatedly connecting the hard disk or running ordinary recovery software can make the situation worse.

For this recovery, a compatible donor hard disk was required.

Donor HDD and Head Replacement

A suitable donor hard disk was purchased specifically for this recovery case.

Donor HDD Cost: Approximately ₹28,000

After selecting the compatible donor drive, the required head replacement procedure was carried out.

Hard disk head replacement is a specialized data recovery process and should only be performed in a controlled professional environment because the internal platters are extremely sensitive to dust, contamination, and physical damage.

Data Recovery Result

The customer's original data volume was approximately:

Original Data Size: 3.1 TB

After recovery:

Recovered Data: Approximately 2.9 TB

Recovery Result: Around 98%

A large amount of the customer's required data was successfully recovered, including multimedia files such as:

  • Videos

  • Songs

  • Personal files

  • Other readable data available from the hard disk

The recovered files were verified before delivery.

Customer Satisfaction

The recovered data was delivered to the customer after verification.

The customer was very happy with the recovery result.

Successful cases like this demonstrate why physically damaged external hard drives require proper diagnosis rather than repeated DIY recovery attempts.

Western Digital WD40NMZW Data Recovery

Important Advice for a Failed WD External Hard Disk

If your WD My Passport contains important data and suddenly stops working:

Do not repeatedly connect and disconnect the drive.

Do not format the hard disk.

Do not initialize the disk in Windows Disk Management.

Do not run CHKDSK on a physically failing hard disk.

Do not open the hard disk yourself.

If the drive is producing clicking, beeping, or unusual mechanical sounds, switch it off and get it professionally diagnosed.

Continuing to power on a drive with a damaged head can increase platter damage and reduce the possibility of successful recovery.
